Don’t just attend the first craft show you come across. It’s really important to research the event, the location and the potential audience. Think about whether you’re a good fit for it: it’s probably not worth the effort if you make things primarily for a younger audience and the clientele at the craft fair is likely to be elderly!
Keep an eye out for local events like fairs and markets, and assess how suitable they are for your lovely crafts. If it’s a regular event, attend it first to get a feel for it and understand how well your crafts would fit in.
How Much to Make?
This is something that’s likely to come with experience, but of course you’ll want a rough estimate of how much stock you should take. How much you sell and how popular the fair is will depend on a huge amount of variables, from where the event’s taking place, to the time of year, and even the weather!
Make Your Stand Memorable
When you do select a fair to attend, make your stand as memorable and attractive as possible – ensure it’s full of your products and think closely about how your stand will be designed. Lots of people might not buy on the day despite liking your products, so having a memorable stand can help jog peoples’ memories later on.
For this reason, it’s a great idea to stock up on business cards so people know where they can buy from you. When it comes to Christmas time you may well be flooded with orders from people who’d seen your wares at a show a few months ago!
Stand out from the crowd!
Be sure to display prices. Often, people attending these events are likely to be put off if there’s no prices, as they may think your products will be too expensive. It’s also a good idea to ensure you’ve got items at a range of different prices to cater for the diversity of the audience.
Don’t be Disheartened
Of course, craft shows – whether local or national – might not always go your way. Nevertheless, don’t be disheartened! Especially when you’re starting out selling your crafts, it’s important to build brand awareness, get out there and start meeting customers and getting feedback.
Not only that, but selling face to face at events is a great way to build your confidence and get a better understanding of what people do and don’t like about your products.
